Bulgaria is grappling with a significant labour shortage, with estimates suggesting a need for between 250,000 and 300,000 foreign workers. This urgent situation was highlighted by Georgi Parvanov, a former president of Bulgaria and current member of the executive committee of the Confederation of Employment.
Addressing the Workforce Gap
Parvanov advocates for establishing quotas for hiring workers from third countries to help fill this gap. He notes that individuals from countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan have shown a strong ability to integrate into Bulgarian society. However, there’s also increasing interest from workers from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, indicating a broader potential pool of talent.

A recent report by the European Labour Authority sheds light on the specific professions facing shortages in Bulgaria. The following 11 occupations are particularly in need of skilled workers:
